West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mamata Banerjee has made headlines by publicly cutting ties with her brother, Babun Banerjee, following a disagreement over party nominations for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The rift escalated after Babun Banerjee expressed dissatisfaction with the re-nomination of Prasun Banerjee from the Howrah Lok Sabha seat, leading Mamata Banerjee to label her brother as 'greedy' and declare the termination of their relationship.

The feud unfolded during Mamata Banerjee's interaction with reporters in Jalpaiguri, where she openly criticized her younger brother for causing disruptions before every election. She denounced his alleged greediness and disavowed any support for dynasty politics, asserting that she would not grant him a ticket for elections. Mamata Banerjee firmly stated her decision to sever all ties with Babun Banerjee, emphasizing her commitment to the official party candidate, Prasun Banerjee.

Responding to speculations about Babun Banerjee's potential switch to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Mamata Banerjee maintained that he could make his own choices while reaffirming her support for Prasun Banerjee as the TMC candidate. Babun Banerjee, however, denied reports of joining the BJP and expressed his intention to contest the Howrah Lok Sabha seat as an independent candidate if necessary, despite knowing Mamata Banerjee's disapproval.

A former footballer and two-time Lok Sabha MP from Howrah, Prasun Banerjee's nomination sparked Babun Banerjee's discontent, citing overlooked capable candidates and alleging personal insults from Prasun. The disagreement has escalated into a public rift, highlighting the internal dynamics and tensions within the TMC ahead of the crucial Lok Sabha polls in 2024.

The development underscores the complex political landscape in West Bengal and the challenges faced by parties in managing internal dissent and aspirations of various stakeholders. Mamata Banerjee's decisive stance reflects her determination to uphold party discipline and prioritize official candidates, setting the tone for a potentially contentious electoral battle in the state.
